Silverweed is a perennial weed and is sometimes called Silver Cinquefoil. It is a low growing herbaceous plant that has a salt tolerance and is commonly found on coastal sites. The plant spreads by rooting stolons (overground runners).The leaves of Silverweed (Potentilla anserina) are pinnate, very similar to those of Creeping Cinquefoil. The leaves (particularly on the underside) are covered with silky white – silver hairs, giving a very silvery appearance hence the name of this weed.The yellow flowers of Silverweed are seen between the months of May and August. The flowers have at least five petals (in rare instances seven) which are bourn on solitary stems.Silverweed can grow in a wide range of conditions such as wet boggy soils or free draining sandy soils on coastal sites.Cultural control involves removing the weed by hand using a small garden fork or similar tool. Maintain good turf vigour with a balanced fertiliser program.Silverweed can be a difficult weed to control with chemicals as it is resistant to many selective weed killers. synthetic grass installation .
