Mouse-ear Chickweed (Cerastium holosteoides) is a low growing perennial weed that forms a tight mat that can tolerate very low mowing heights. Its growth is however, not as aggressive as Common Chickweed. The weed is abundant in all types of conditions from luxury lawns to waste areas of ground.The leaves of Mouse-ear Chickweed resemble a mouses ear, hence the name. The often dark green leaves are very fleshy and are covered with many tiny hairs.Mouse-ear Chickweed flowers between April and September and are self and insect pollinated. The white flowers each have 5 petals which are deeply lobed, often giving the appearance of 10 petals. Mouse-ear Chickweed can grow in a wide range of soils but prefers dry, nutrient rich conditions.This weed can be controlled culturally by hand weeding if the plants are few in number.
